In early 2011, Republican governor Scott Walker proposed a vicious attack on labor rights disguised as the “Budget Repair Bill” that gutted public-sector unions in Wisconsin.
Union membership in Wisconsin plummeted, and the labor movement has yet to recover.
The passing of Act 10 was by no means inevitable. We have a rich history of workers in this country schooling themselves in the strategy and tactics of class-struggle unionism. It's time to relearn their lessons and finish the fight.
- Building a movement to overturn act 10 will require cross-union organizing!
-Build a militant core within your union and link up with other public sector unions
-Build cross-union solidarity and community support to broaden the campaign and give it the strength it needs to come up against Act 10.
-Fight for concrete, bold demands that will motivate other workers to join the fight.
-Build toward militant, mass actions like strikes that can make Act 10 unenforceable and force the state government to reverse it.
Thousands of workers from across Wisconsin and the US rallied in Madison to protest Act 10. The demonstrations swelled to as many as 500,000 people at its peak and involved a full-fledged mass-occupation of the Capitol that lasted several weeks.
How did Act 10 pass despite the massive public backlash?
Act 10, which effectively strips public-sector unions of their rights to bargain, has kept workers in Wisconsin in poverty for over a decade. Recently, unions have announced a lawsuit to challenge Act 10.
